Take Advantage of the Calm Before The Storm

Summer is mid-hurricane season here in the Atlantic Provinces. As we’ve seen in recent years, Newfoundland & Labrador is not immune to these powerful storms. The time to think about protecting your family is now: before damage happens. Here’s how to minimize any possible damage and get things back to normal quickly:

In the Event of a Flood:

  • Listen to emergency broadcasts and follow instructions.
  • Before re-entering your home, check for structural damage.
  • Leave power off until your home is inspected by a qualified electrician.
  • Boil all drinking water until given the ‘okay’
  • Remove salvageable items from flooded basements.
  • Wear gloves and boots to clean and disinfect wet items.
  • Use bleach to prevent and destroy mould. Dry thoroughly.
  • Take photographs of all flood damaged items and property areas.
  • Make a list of lost or damaged items, including purchase price and date, and gather receipts.

In the Event of a Storm:

  • Listen to emergency broadcasts and follow instructions.
  • Take photographs of all damaged items and property.
  • Clear branches or other debris from your property
  • Clearing rain gutters and drain spouts

Fire Preparedness and Response:

  • Listen to emergency broadcasts and follow instructions.
  • Have – and practice – a fire evacuation plan.
  • Keep flammable items away from your home.
  • Prepare and have an evacuation emergency kit.
